Have you ever dreamed of making that café-style iced latte at home? That glass full of ice, with silky milk at the bottom and a smooth espresso layer on top—it just looks and tastes like summer.
Today, we’ll walk you through every step of making a Coffee Iced Latte, with specific amounts and tips, so you can recreate this cool and creamy drink in your own kitchen. Let’s get started!
What Is a Coffee Iced Latte?
A Coffee Iced Latte is a cold version of the classic café latte. It’s made with espresso, chilled milk, and ice cubes, creating a layered or blended drink that’s refreshing and smooth. Unlike regular iced coffee, it uses espresso, which gives it a richer, deeper flavor. This drink is perfect when we want something energizing but also cool and comforting.
Ingredients We Need
Let’s prepare the following:
- 1 heaping tablespoon (about 10g) of finely ground coffee (espresso roast is best)
- 150ml full-fat cold milk (chilled in the fridge)
- A glass full of ice cubes (about 7–10 pieces, enough to fill the glass ⅔ full)
- Sugar (optional, to taste) — around 1–2 teaspoons if you prefer sweet drinks
- Purified or mineral water, for the espresso machine
Tools You’ll Need
- An espresso machine
- A coffee grinder (if using whole beans)
- A measuring spoon
- A tall glass
- A small spoon or fork for pouring assistance
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Milk and Ice
Before we do anything else, take the milk out of the fridge so it’s cold. Pour 150ml of milk into a tall glass and stir it gently. Then add enough ice cubes to fill about two-thirds of the glass. This keeps everything chilled and gives the drink structure for layering.
Step 2: Fill the Water Tank
Next, make sure your espresso machine’s water tank is filled. Use purified or mineral water. Avoid tap water if possible—it can affect the taste.
Step 3: Grind the Coffee
If we’re using coffee beans, grind them until they’re very fine (espresso-level). Measure 1 heaping tablespoon (about 10g) and scoop it into the portafilter.
Step 4: Tamp the Coffee Grounds
Use the flat end of your coffee scoop to gently press the grounds down. Don’t press too hard—just enough to create a level surface. Make sure it stays below the filter line.
Step 5: Lock in the Portafilter and Power On
Attach the portafilter into the machine and lock it into place. Then turn on the power and wait for the machine to heat up. Once the green light appears, it's ready.
Step 6: Brew the Espresso Shot
Select the coffee mode or press the start button to begin brewing. The machine will extract 1 shot of espresso (about 30ml). Once done, let it sit for 1–2 minutes to cool slightly. If you want to sweeten it, add 1–2 teaspoons of sugar now and stir to dissolve.
Step 7: Layer the Coffee Over Milk
Now comes the fun part. Use a spoon or fork and hold it just over the milk, resting on the edge of the glass. Slowly pour the espresso over the spoon to create a beautiful layered effect. The slower we pour, the clearer the layers will be.
Step 8: Stir Before Drinking (Optional)
We can choose to stir it all together before drinking or enjoy the beautiful layers and sip through a straw. Either way, it’s creamy, strong, and refreshing.
Tips for a Better Iced Latte
- Always use chilled milk—it helps form clear layers.
- Adjust the coffee strength to your liking. Prefer stronger? Use a double shot.
- If layering isn’t working well, try pouring even more slowly or tilt your glass slightly.
- Want it creamier? Add a splash of whipping cream or use oat/almond milk as an alternative.
