Just a two-hour train ride from Florence, Bologna offers a captivating Italian experience. This city, steeped in food history since the Middle Ages, gifts the world culinary treasures like lasagne alla bolognese, tortellini, and ragù.
Beyond its gastronomic fame, Bologna boasts the oldest university in the Western world and a vibrant music scene recognized by UNESCO. It's a place where ancient charm meets modern energy.

City's Social Heart

During my three-day visit, guided by Catia Aliberti, I witnessed Bologna’s unique blend of history and contemporary life. “The cultural tradition of Bologna is conviviality,” Aliberti explained. “Sharing meals with friends and acquaintances is a much-awaited moment of the day.” This social atmosphere pervades the city's terra-cotta-colored squares and ornate porticoes.

Perfect Timing

For optimal travel, visit Bologna during April to May or September to October to avoid peak season crowds and prices. The city experiences extreme weather, with hot summers and damp winters. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures for exploring outdoor markets and piazzas.

City's Key Sites

Explore Bologna’s nicknames: La Dotta, La Grassa, and La Rossa. Start at Piazza Maggiore, the city’s central hub. Visit Basilica di San Petronio, with its unfinished facade and world’s longest sundial.
Climb Torre dell'Orologio for panoramic views (entry around €6). Discover ancient Roman ruins at Salaborsa Library (free entry). Stroll through Bologna’s iconic porticoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t miss the oldest wooden portico on Via Marsala and the longest covered walkway, Portico di San Luca.

Cultural Gems

For film enthusiasts, Cineteca di Bologna houses over 18,000 international movies. In summer, Piazza Maggiore hosts Sotto le Stelle del Cinema, Europe’s largest open-air film screenings. Bologna’s location makes it ideal for day trips.
A one-hour drive takes you to Modena, a UNESCO World Heritage city. Visit Museo del Balsamico Tradizionale in Spilamberto (tours around €15). Explore Mercato Albinelli in Modena and savor tortellini en brodo (around €12-€15). For a fine dining experience, try to book a table in Osteria Francescana, a 3 Michelin star restaurant.
