The Alps stretch across eight countries in Europe, but some of the most famous peaks are found in Switzerland, Germany, and France. Each region offers unique experiences, from challenging hikes to more leisurely explorations.

The Alps' breathtaking landscapes are unparalleled, making it a prime destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike. But with so many peaks to choose from, where should you begin?

1. The Highest: Zugspitze

For first-timers, Zugspitze in Germany is a great introduction to the Alps. It's the highest peak in the country, reaching 2,962 meters (9,718 ft). There are multiple routes to the summit, with the Reintal route being the most popular. Though it's challenging, with a massive elevation gain, the views are worth it.

Starting in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, this 23-kilometer (14-mile) hike can be done in a day or spread over two days for a more relaxed experience. Plan for around €60 for a round-trip cable car ticket if you’d rather save your legs for the descent.

2. Going Moderate: Männlichen

In Switzerland, Männlichen, at 2,343 meters (7,687 ft), offers a more moderate challenge with stunning views of Wengen. The hike from Wengen to Männlichen takes about 2.5 hours and is ideal for those who want a shorter but rewarding trek. Alternatively, you can take the aerial cable car to the top for around CHF 30-40.

The Bernese Alps, where Männlichen is located, provide beautiful views of snow-capped peaks and quaint Swiss villages. Be prepared for steep climbs but also relaxing alpine restaurants along the way.

3. The Icon: Mont Blanc

If you're looking for an iconic experience, head to France’s Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe at 4,809 meters (15,777 ft). The most popular routes require experience in mountaineering, but there are also less technical hikes nearby, such as Chamonix's trails.

While Mont Blanc is an ultimate adventure for many, it's crucial to prepare well and consider hiring a guide if you're planning to summit. Cable cars from Chamonix to the Aiguille du Midi cost around €65-70.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit the Alps is between June and September when the weather is pleasant, and most trails are snow-free. However, if you're into skiing or snow sports, winter months offer some of the best slopes in Europe, especially in resorts like Zermatt Ski Resort and Ecrin Blanc Resort Courchevel.

Something Different: "Training" Your Way

For the ultimate scenic journey, consider taking the Bernina Express. This world-famous train route travels through Switzerland’s spectacular alpine landscapes, from Chur to Tirano, Italy. With ticket prices starting at CHF 60, it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the views without the physical demands of hiking

Those are the peaks you should visit (or hike) when you to the Alps, otherwise, you haven't been to the Alps. Choose the peak that matches your interests, and prepare for an adventure filled with stunning vistas and fresh mountain air!
