Hello, travel enthusiasts! We recently had the incredible opportunity to visit the mesmerizing Volcanic Island in Fujian, China, and we're excited to share our journey with you. This hidden gem, known locally as Putuo Island, is renowned for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, stunning coastal scenery, and delicious local cuisine.


Whether you're a nature lover, a foodie, or just in search of an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Volcanic Island has something special for everyone.


Discovering the Island's Natural Wonders


Our adventure began with a trip to the island’s most famous attraction—the Volcanic Geological Park. This park offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s volcanic past, with its unique rock formations and craters. We took the Volcanic Crater Trail, which provided breathtaking views of the rugged landscape and the sparkling blue sea. The park is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and tickets cost about ¥80 (roughly $11) for adults and ¥40 (about $5.50) for children.


Next, we ventured to the East Coast Scenic Area, known for its striking cliffs and panoramic ocean views. We spent a leisurely afternoon here, taking in the natural beauty and enjoying a refreshing sea breeze. The area is accessible year-round, with a nominal entrance fee of ¥30 (around $4) that ensures maintenance of the site. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and catch the most spectacular light.


Unraveling Coastal Charm


No visit to Volcanic Island would be complete without experiencing its coastal charm. The South Beach is an ideal spot for a relaxing day by the sea. The soft, golden sands and crystal-clear waters offer the perfect setting for sunbathing or a swim. Lifeguards are on duty, and the beach has a small café where we enjoyed some refreshing cold drinks and light snacks.


For those interested in hiking, the Sunset Hill trail is a must. The trek to the top is relatively short but offers one of the best vantage points for watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean. It’s a popular spot, so we recommend arriving about an hour before sunset to secure a good spot. There’s no fee for this trail, but don’t forget to bring some water and wear comfortable shoes!


Savoring Local Flavors


Our taste buds were treated to some fantastic local cuisine, showcasing the island’s culinary heritage. One standout dish was the Seafood Hotpot, brimming with fresh fish, shrimp, and a variety of local vegetables. We found a cozy restaurant near the beach that served this hearty dish for about ¥150 (around $20) for a generous portion.


Another local favorite is the Fujian-style Fried Noodles, a deliciously savory dish with a perfect balance of flavors and textures. At a small eatery in the town center, we enjoyed a plate of these flavorful noodles for just ¥40 (about $5.50). If you’re a fan of seafood, don’t miss the Grilled Squid, which was tender and juicy, priced around ¥60 (about $8).


For dessert, we tried the Sweet Potato Balls, which are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were a delightful treat at just ¥20 (about $2.75) from a local street vendor.
