As you drive out of Barnaul, your first major stop should be the Katun River. This turquoise ribbon of water is the lifeblood of the Altai region, and its scenic beauty is unparalleled. Consider stopping in the village of Chemal, a popular spot along the river where you can hike to Patmos Island.

Continuing along the Chuysky Tract, one of the oldest and most beautiful roads in the continent, you'll come across the Kyzyl-Chin Valley, also known as Mars Valley.
