Ingredients:

• 1 block of firm tofu

• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

• 1 red bell pepper, sliced

• 1 cup broccoli florets

• 1 medium carrot, sliced

• 3 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 tablespoon ginger, minced

• 2 tablespoons soy sauce

• 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)

• 1 teaspoon sesame oil

• 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for extra crispiness)

• 2 green onions, chopped

• Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Steps:

• 1. Prepare the Tofu: Start by draining the tofu and pressing it to remove excess moisture. This can be done by placing the tofu between two paper towels and pressing it gently. For extra crispiness, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes and toss them with cornstarch.

• Cook the Tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok on medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on all sides. When you're finished, take the tofu out of the skillet and set it aside.

• Stir-Fry the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed. Cook the garlic and ginger until you smell them, about 1 minute. Then add the sliced bell pepper, broccoli, and carrot. Stir-fry the vegetables for about 4-5 minutes, or until they are tender-crisp.

• Combine Tofu and Sauce: Return the tofu to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour in the soy sauce and hoisin sauce (if you're using it). Stir well to coat the tofu and vegetables with the sauce. Cook for an additional 2 minutes to ensure everything is heated through and the flavors are well combined.

• Finish and Serve: Drizzle the sesame oil over the stir-fry and toss to combine. If you want, sprinkle with chopped green onions and sesame seeds on top. Serve the tofu stir-fry hot over rice or noodles.

Choosing and Buying Tofu:

• Type: For this recipe, firm or extra-firm tofu is ideal because it holds its shape well during cooking. Silken tofu is too soft for stir-frying and works better in smoothies or soups.

• Freshness: Look at the expiration date on the package. Fresh tofu should be refrigerated and is usually found in the produce or refrigerated section of grocery stores.

• Price: Tofu is relatively affordable. A block of firm tofu typically costs between $1.50 and $3.00, depending on the brand and location.
