Not many things beat a day by the seaside. There's nothing quite like the feel of the sun on your back and waves breaking over your feet. There's also lots of nature and wildlife to discover, from graceful coastal birds and scurrying crabs to pearly shells and slimy seaweed. This list has inspiring ways to help you get close to nature by the sea.

1. Build a Sandcastle

Although it can be quite hard for beginners, building a sandcastle is one of the most enjoyable activities that people of all ages (especially kids) can do on the beach. Plus, it can be a great bonding moment with your family or friends, not to mention it can also put your creativity and skills to the test!

2. Look for Dolphins

Many beaches all over the world offer the chance to see dolphins right from the shore—if you know what you're looking for and when to look. Do a little bit of research to see if your beaches apply and if so, check the best times to visit. Don't forget your camera!

3. Skim a Stone

How many bounces can you do? Flat, smooth stones are the best for skimming, and there are plenty to be found on our beaches. Why not challenge your family and friends to a competition?

4. Camp on the Beach

There’s nothing quite like enjoying the night at the beach (and eating s’mores!). From setting up the camp to telling stories around the fire, it all will be a great bonding experience. It can even become a yearly tradition!

5. Play on the Boardwalk

A lot of beaches also have accompanying boardwalks where you can play arcade games, ride rollercoasters, eat delicious and unhealthy amusement park food, just walk around, and even enjoy free summer concerts on the sand. Check their respective websites to see what will be featured on the day you'll be there.

6. Fly a kite

A windy day near the coast makes for perfect kite-flying weather. While you’re flying your kite, keep an eye on the sky for seabirds such as sandwich terns, oystercatchers and black-headed seagulls that swoop and dive above beaches and cliffs.

7. Collect Seashells or Rocks

As far as affordable activities on a trip go, you can’t get a much cheaper one than collecting seashells and rocks—it’s free on most beaches. Just make sure it’s acceptable before removing them from the beach!

8. Play Frisbee

Frisbee is a classic beach game that people never get tired of enjoying together. There's only one prop needed, and it's very easy (and cheap) to get. You can even play with your dogs (if you're on a pet-friendly beach). There are also more advanced versions like Frisbee golf, Ultimate Frisbee, and Aerobie, but the basic version will do just fine.

9. Explore a cave

Wonderful wildlife and slimy green weeds – who knows what you’ll discover? If you're heading to the beach this summer, then be sure to keep a look out for any caves in rocks near the beach. Lots of the places we look after near the coast have caves to explore, but you'll need to watch out for the tides.

10. Have a Bonfire Party

A bonfire can add incredible ambiance to any party, especially on a warm Summer night on the beach. So, invite your friends, load up your cooler with beverages, bring lots of wood and a radio to play your favorite tunes.
